Local community groups and organisations need your help more than ever to support people over the festive season. It’s been a difficult year for lots of groups and charities who have struggled to keep going in lockdown and beyond. TSL Kirklees Volunteering have some useful information about how you can give local to show your support.

Pumpkin Picking and Creepy Crawley Trail, October 2020

Pick your own pumpkin from the Stirley Farm gardens and complete a creepy crawly trail with a sweet treat at the end. You can dress up in your favorite spooky halloween costume! Join in the fun from Monday 26th to Saturday 31st October, 10am to 1pm at Stirley Community Farm, off Hall Bower Lane, Huddersfield HD4 6FA.

It’s all outdoors and the organisers, Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, have done everything they can to make sure you’ll feel safe and secure while still having fun. Booking in advance is essential.

Walk, move, relax

Do you need time to leave worries behind and reconnect and chat with others? Then come along to this free class, every Wednesday from 9.15am to 10.30am. Includes a chance to chat, breathing exercises and gentle yoga moves. Meet at the entrance to St. John’s Church, Jackroyd Lane, Newsome. Walk sets off at 9.30am.

Newsome Play Day Treasure Hunts

We can’t get together for our usual Play Day event this year, but you can still join in the fun. Newsome Ward Community Forum are setting up 3 Treasure Hunt Trails around Newsome.

Pick up your entry forms at one of these local stores:

  • Newsome Fisheries
  • Newsome Post Office
  • Fair Price
  • Naim Stores

The forms will tell you where the Treasure Hunt routes are, and how to join in.

You can take part from Wednesday 5th August 2020, which is National Play Day.

The closing date for entries is 5pm on Wednesday 19th August.

Prizes will be suitable for ages 3 to 12 years old.

Growing Great Places online crowdfunding workshops

Growing Great Places online community crowdfunding workshops

Growing Great Places is a community crowdfunding programme to support citizens and organisations who have great ideas for making our local places even better. Kirklees Council are pledging £50k of funding over the next year, plus advice and support to help you run a great crowdfunding campaign.

You might have a little idea that can have a big impact by bringing a place together. Or you might need some help growing support for an ambitious project that’s just getting started.

If you’re interested in finding out more, register now for one of these free community crowdfunding workshops, hosted by Spacehive, where you can:

  • Hear about funds from Kirklees Council available for your project
  • Receive advice on developing your project from the team and our partners at Locality
  • Join smaller break out rooms for interactive, specialised support for your project including Q&As with Spacehive project creators
  • Access advice on planning and promoting your campaign
  • Stay for an optional ‘Tea + Talk’ for virtual community networking

Growing Newsome Plant Drop

This year’s Big Plant Swap in Newsome is a little different. Although we aren’t able to get together for our usual event this year, we are still here for each other. And we still want to help people grow their own food. So with a little help from our friends, Growing Newsome are making something a bit special happen this month. We’ve already dropped hundreds of plants on the doorsteps of people who are shielding, self-isolating or growing food for their wellbeing. And there’s still time for you to join in…
